The leaves are down, it’s cold (deep freeze cold here in the Catskills!), and the holidays are right around the corner. Just like that, it’s Thanksgiving again.
The year has flown by, as the Catskill Mountainkeeper team has been busy working hard to protect and strengthen some of the things that we’re all most thankful for – the health of our communities, the integrity of our ecosystems, and vibrant local economies that provide jobs and healthy food for area residents.

To Frack or Not - Let the Science Decide
In last week's gubernatorial debate Rob Astorino, the Republican nominee and Westchester County Executive, said that if elected he would move forward with gas drilling within the first 90 days of his administration.
Governor Cuomo countered, "I'm not a scientist. Let the scientists decide…. whatever the experts say is right, that's what I will do…"And the science is increasingly clear. The process of extracting, processing and transporting natural gas puts dangerous toxins into our water and air, and emits global warming-inducing green house gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere.

1. Climate change is here -- it is real and well documented, and is causing droughts, super storms, sea level rise, and a multitude of other extreme weather phenomena and related problems.
2. The fossil fuel industry continues to expand, employing increasingly destructive and resource intensive methods for energy extraction. Unless we take action, we face the real possibility of the privatization of our air, water and land resources under the guise of a “global climate compact.”
3. Extreme weather and extreme energy extraction go hand in hand, as evidenced by rising temperatures that generate localized and often catastrophic weather events around the world, including here in the Catskills...

Natural gas poses a serious threat to our climate because methane -- a component of natural gas -- is eighty-six times more powerful at trapping heat over a 20-year period than carbon dioxide. Methane leakage during the entire fracking and transport process (from wells, pipelines, compressors and processing units) evicerates any climate benefit of burning gas over coal...
