Keeper of the Catskills Award

Join us as we honor famed singer and song-writer Natalie Merchant and award-winning writer and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster for their lifetime of environmental and human rights activism. The annual "Keeper of the Catskills Award" recognizes the varied contributions of our region's environmental heroes. Past honorees include Bill McKibben, Robert Kennedy Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Mark Z. Jacobson, and Jayni and Chevy Chase.

Environmental Film Series

A series of compelling short films will be shown on topics ranging from climate change and fracking to local food and Catskill history. Following are some highlights, visit us on the 3rd floor of the barn for more titles and screening times.

Backyard (Sat & Sun, 11 am & 3 pm) "Backyard" tells the stories of five people in four states (North Dakota, Montana, Dear

dear-pres-obama_sm.jpgPresident Obama (Sat & Sun, 12 & 2pm) — Watch a sneak preview of Jon Bowermaster’s latest film, “Dear President Obama, Americans Against Fracking in One Voice.” This latest film dives deep into the fracking issue by sharing interviews with victims, whistle-blowers, economists and energy experts across the United States. The cross-country look at the issues highlight the stories of fracking’s victims, the false promise of natural gas’s economic boom, the risk of environmental contamination, and a focus on alternative energy solutions. Music, in the vein of Pete Seeger’s life-long work, will be the thread that weaves the varied accounts into a potent story. Bowermaster will be on-hand to answer your questions about the film, and to relay his first-hand account of the impacts of drilling. Jon and Natalie will join us for a Director's Q&A after the 2:00pm Saturday screening.

Pennsylvania, and Colorado), all with very different backgrounds and perspectives, but all at odds with the natural gas extraction occurring around them. Despite their differences, unnerving similarities emerge from their shared experiences of the massive unseen entity that is "the industry." (28 minutes)

County Fair (Sat & Sun, 10:30 am)  Long ingrained in our culture, county fairs are uniquely American. As we have evolved, so have our fairs. While county fairs are a regular and recurring part of many American lifestyles, they may be completely alien to urban and suburban cultures. The film attempts to document what county fairs are all about and capture this fading slice of our culture. The film features the Delaware County Fair because of its long history and dedication to community. (33 minutes)

Catskill Park (Sat & Sun)  A Catskill Mountainkeeper production that explores the beauty, history and importance of the Catskills through interviews with artists, historians, environmentalists, farmers, residents and visitors. The film considers the historical role of the Catskills as a mecca for recreation, health, and artistic pursuits, and its critical role as the watershed that not only supplies water to millions in the New York metropolitan area but stands as a role model for the rest of the country. See the trailer (3 minutes); world premiere this fall at the Woodstock Film Festival.
