Post Election -- the fight of our lives

Given the new political landscape, it’s clear that we can expect rough waters. But Catskill Mountainkeeper has never shied away from big challenges, and we are not daunted by what lies ahead.  Our mission is now even more important, and so we are redoubling our efforts to advocate for our region and its communities, to combat our dependence on dirty and dangerous fossil fuels, and to chart the course to a clean and renewable energy future.

Dear Supporters and Activists,

Like so many people, Mountainkeeper’s team has spent the past week and a half processing the election results, and thinking about what it means for the issues we all care about so deeply.

But let’s be clear: it will not be easy. We will need to work harder and smarter, and come together in ways that we never have before to play a strong defense in protecting the important environmental progress we have made over the years, while advancing positive and sustainable solutions.

And despite the daunting challenges ahead, Catskill Mountainkeeper remains hopeful for the future. Although this election has been polarizing, we must not let it divide our nation or distract us from what is most important moving forward. We are committed to working together to create the kind of world we want for our kids and grandkids. You can rest assured that Mountainkeeper’s team is rolling up our sleeves and getting ready0 to dive in deep.

We have lots of great progress to build on. Mountainkeeper’s work here on the ground in the Catskills, in New York State, and with allies across the country is a powerful model for how to get good things done.  To name a few examples, we played a lead role in securing New York’s ban on fracking, have launched a massive multi-year Solarize campaign to help New York build a clean energy future, and are positioned at the forefront of the climate fight, playing a strong defense against the oil and gas industry’s efforts to advance fossil fuel infrastructure projects that would turn New York into an oil and gas state.

In just a few weeks, National Geographic magazine’s December issue will feature the groundbreaking efforts of Ulster County to set a positive example of environmental stewardship in protecting habitat while promoting sustainable development, and becoming the first and so far only county in New York to become net carbon neutral, getting 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy. Working out of our Woodstock office, Mountainkeeper is playing an important role in helping Ulster set this powerful positive example, along with our many other important initiatives.

Mountainkeeper’s mission is more important than ever in these challenging times, and I send many thanks for standing with the team as we keep fighting for a clean, safe, and sustainable future for us all.

With appreciation,
