Defend the Standing Rock Water Protectors

Call President Obama 1-202-456-1414 now and ask him to direct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits under ‘Nationwide Permit 12,' to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline once and for all, and to immediately halt the violent police activity against peaceful water protectors.

For the past seven months, members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota, along with hundreds of Native Nations and thousands of allies, have been peacefully encamped to protect the Tribe’s sacred treaty land, burial grounds, and the Missouri River–which provides drinking water for millions of people. These ‘water protectors’ are on the front lines to save precious natural resources from the Dakota Access Pipeline--a $3.8 billion fracked oil pipeline that would pass through the tribe’s ancestral lands, threatening its water supply. You can help.

It is critically important that the President hears from you today. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued an order to vacate the camp by Monday, December 5th.  Even though the Corps stated it would not forcibly evict residents, there’s the potential for a violent showdown with local law enforcement as has been happening regularly and escalated to extreme levels on November 21, 2016. Water protectors were pelted with rubber bullets, sprayed with water cannons in below-freezing weather, and assaulted with tear gas.

For Mountainkeeper, this fight is personal. Not only are our friends and allies getting hurt on the front lines, but in New York we are fighting against the same proliferation of infrastructure that would carry the same volatile, toxic fracked crude oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota through our state.  In North Dakota it’s the Dakota Access Pipeline, and in New York it’s the Pilgrim Pipelines, bomb trains traveling through our communities and barges and tankers filled with this oil going up and down the Hudson.

What happens at Standing Rock will impact how these fights play out nationally—including here in New York.  Call President Obama now at 1-202-456-1414 and let him know that you’re watching.

Mountainkeeper stands with our allies in North Dakota. It is unbelievable that the state and federal governments, and their police forces, are protecting the interests of fossil fuel companies, violently attacking peaceful activists seeking to protect water, land and air—and the health and safety of their families—from this pipeline.  We need Mountainkeeper’s friends to fight back by calling on President Obama to stop the ongoing violations of constitutional, civil, human, and treaty rights; halt the pipeline; and respect the Standing Rock Tribe's sovereign rights.

Please call President Obama 1-202-456-1414 and ask him to direct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits under ‘Nationwide Permit 12,' to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline once and for all, and to immediately halt the violent police activity against peaceful water protectors. Tell him that you would support a bold action to declare a “Standing Rock” national monument that prohibits pipelines in, over, or underneath the land and water in these tribal lands.

And one more request, after you’ve phoned the President, please email our Outreach staffer so we can keep count of the total number of calls made. That will really help us track the progress of this important campaign.
