President Trump is likely pulling America out of the Paris Climate Agreement. This will put us in the company of Syria andNicaragua--the only other two countries not participating in the world-wide agreement, which aims to slow the worst impacts of a changing climate.
The United States is the second largest carbon emitter, and our actions have global implications. Pulling out could destabilize international relations and sets a dangerous precedent for other countries. It puts millions of Americans' lives and property in the crosshairs as we lose the federal government as a partner to prevent extreme sea-level rise, rising temperatures, and more severe storms.
The truth is there is no silver lining. But Catskill Mountainkeeper will double down and do all we can--because change begins at home. As the feds step down, the states can step up--New York State can lead. We are working with the state legislature to pass the Climate and Community Protection Act, a bill to drastically reduce New York's emissions across every economic sector while supporting workers and extending environmental justice. We are fighting the buildout of fossil fuel infrastructure, and working through our RenewableNY program to build the clean energy future.
Feeling outraged and need something to do? Two actions for you: first call Governor Cuomo (518-474-8390) and ask him to support the Climate and Community Protection Act--we face an uphill battle in the New York State Senate without his support. Second, please support Mountainkeeper's work. Whether it's $1, $5, or $500, we'll put it to work for you, fighting climate change and building New York's clean energy revolution.
You are our strongest partner in this work, and we thank you. We need to work together now more than ever. We'll keep you in the loop and give you opportunities to act.
