New York Top Court OKs Local Drill Bans
UPDATE: One of the leading opponents of the natural gas extraction method of hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - in Sullivan County and New York State cheered the appellate court's decision to uphold local drilling bans.
"It's a huge day for communities in New York," said Wes Gillingham of Sullivan County-based Catskill Mountainkeeper.
Five towns in Sullivan have passed laws to ban fracking. Two, Delaware and Fremont, passed resolutions supporting it.

Democrats Introduce Fracking Waste Bills
A trio of Democrats in the New York State Senate are introducing legislation that would ban the use of hydraulic fracturing waste products. The minority conference released four bills that would ban fracking waste from being shipped into the state; ban waste products from being retooled and reused on roads and highways; ban the sale of liquid fracking waste; and prohibit water treatment facilities and landfills from accepting fracked waste products.
Manhattan Democrat Liz Krueger sponsored the bill to prohibit the sale of any fracked liquid waste products. She says toxic materials from other states are being dumped in New York. “I learned from the scientists and the medical doctors we had testifying yesterday that large quantities of the fracking waste are actually being imported across state lines into our state. Some is poured directly into municipal wastewater systems.

The Community Fracking Defense Project Ramps up Local Efforts
The Fight Continues Against Fracking in Upstate New York: Catskill Mountainkeeper ramps up effort at local government level By Betta Broad High-Volume hydraulic fracking is not currently taking place in upstate New York, but the threat that this process poses to our environment continues to grow in other ways. Right now a de facto moratorium exists in New York to allow the state's Department of Health and Department of Environmental Conservation to research the health and environmental impacts of proposed fracking. We continue to wait for their initial findings but the struggle to prevent gas and oil companies from bringing fracking, its infrastructure, and its waste to New York goes on. As the oil and gas industry expands fracking in neighboring states, trucks carrying toxic frack waste from sites in Pennsylvania and Ohio travel our roads in New York....
