Moving Forward

Why addressing climate change is so critical now

Scientists agree that this decade is critical in efforts to contain global warming.  They warned at the “Planet Under Pressure” conference in London in March 2012, that the world is close to reaching a tipping point that will make it permanently hotter.  In the Scientific American article, “Global Warming is Coming Close to Becoming Irreversible,” scientists said that the effects of climate change such as the melting of polar ice sheets and the loss of rainforests will bring the world close to reaching thresholds beyond which the effects of climate change will be irreversible.

So what can we do?

The first thing is to become educated and help to educate your family and friends so that everyone knows what’s at stake.  We have created this Climatekeeper website to give you an overview of the causes and consequences of climate change.

If you haven’t already, sign up for Catskill Mountainkeeper free Action Alerts so you can participate in actions that will help to move us toward a renewable energy future.  For some of you that may mean attending rallies or events and for others it may mean contacting your government officials.  Please participate in any way you can.

Go to our “Take Action” to add your name to ongoing petitions and letters to our legislative leaders.  The only way that we are going get the ear of our government leaders is by having so many of us speak out that they will be forced to listen and implement policies that will move us toward a renewable energy future.

Help us to get the word out about the dangers of fracking and climate change.
Please forward a message to your friends, family and neighbors, ask them use our website to get educated about climate change and encourage them to sign up for our timely action alerts so that they can stay up-to-date on what is happening.

Take steps in your own life to lower your carbon footprint.

As Will Steffen, Executive Director of the Australian National University’s Climate Change Institute says,  “This is the critical decade. If we don’t get the curves turned around this decade we will cross those lines.”

The climate change situation is critical but it is not hopeless.  If we can apply the same type of focus and ingenuity to halting climate that we did to put a man on the moon we can solve this.  Please get involved.
