Solarize Sullivan Campaign Kicks Off

Solarize Sullivan is a community-led, solar energy campaign, aimed to attract residents to usage of solar energy. Catskill Mountainkeeper's Renewable New York program and the State Energy Development Authority are supporting the project.

“It’s a real opportunity to showcase how solar revolution can happen in both an urban environment and a rural environment,” said Ramsey Adams, the Catskill Mountainkeeper Executive Director.

He say residents and small businesses can reduce their carbon footprint while saving money.

Renewable New York launched a year and a half ago, with a goal of bringing solar energy to 16 counties across the state. This week, the campaign reached the Catskills.

“So what we’re doing is basically an education campaign to provide resources to people interested in buying solar,” Adams said.

Over the next three months, the campaign will provide information on pricing options, tax incentives, and free site assessments in the county.

Organizers hope this will create demand for solar panels across the county.

“So if 100 people [are] collectively buying solar panels, it reduces the cost dramatically,” Adams said.

Two private companies will handle those free assessments: Apex Solar Power and Solar Liberty. They'll also provide leasing and purchasing options for solar panels. The campaign runs through October 31.
