Going Green

It is widely accepted among climate scientists that the composition of our atmosphere is changing as a result of increased carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gasses and that this change is having an impact on average global temperatures and weather patterns.  The recent storms and flooding in our area represent only a taste of what climate change could have in store for the Northeast.  Climate scientists project increased precipitation and severe weather for our area.

Our traditional energy source, the burning of carbon-based fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, release billions of tons of carbon dioxide annually.  If we are to curb our carbon emissions, and mitigate climate change, we must change our primary energy source to more environmentally friendly alternatives like solar, wind, hydropower, biomass and hydrogen.

By increasing energy production from renewable sources we can decrease our dependence on the greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuels and reduce our carbon footprint.  In New York State, only 3% of our electricity is supplied from renewable sources (excluding hydropower).

Many businesses, residents, and towns have taken steps toward a greener lifestyle.  For example, The Town of Woodstock has developed a Carbon Neutral Initiative and has created a Green Guide for residents to understand the importance of going green, and provide resources to make the shift.  Catskill Mountainkeeper is working to create green guides to Catskill towns, showcasing green businesses and local greening methods.  If you have any guides or information to share, please let us know!
