A People’s Hearing on Fracking

Saturday June 2, 2012

Burchfield Penny Art Center, and

Buffalo State College, Buffalo New York

www.peopleshearing.com

A People’s Hearing on Fracking will give Western New Yorkers a chance to publicly state their views in a way that was denied to this region by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) during the DEC’s Fall 2011 draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement on fracking.  The DEC held four public Hearings downstate, but none were held in Western New York (WNY).

Although this People’s Hearing is being held in Western New York, we are reaching out to a much broader national and international region.  Our regional and global ecosystems are at risk.

The event will have several purposes. They include:

  1. Direct engagement with local, state, and national governments, agencies, and elected officials. Testimony collected at the event will be recorded and delivered in the forms of letters, petitions, transcripts, and video tape to appropriate officials.
  2. Information sharing through scheduled presentations by health, environmental, and economic experts.
  3. In conjunction with A People’s Hearing, A Peoples Congress will be convened as we attempt to find ways to design and implement regional collaboration and leadership strategies. This Congress will include presentations, discussions, creative problem solving, and planning discussions so that we all may find ways to work more effectively and collectively toward a goal of banning fracking in New York, in the United States, and around the world.
  4. Engagement. We are working with diverse communities on this event including anti fracking and other environmental activists, occupy movements, the Arts and Cultural Communities, schools and teachers, entertainment and popular culture communities, small and local business communities, LGBT communities, environmental justice communities, and media activists to help get the message on anti-fracking to become widely shared knowledge.

We invite you to join us.  You may find more information at our website:

Cyber-Café, Binghamton: Gimme! Coffee, Ithaca State St.: Las Chicas Taqueria, Owego

On June 3rd the Finger Lakes Clean Waters Initiative kicks off its 2012 “Big Splash” concert series at Recreation Park with ten bands on two stages including the GrassRoots Festival Dance Tent. The Roots Rock supergroup The Word, featuring Jon Medeski, Robert Randolph, and The North Mississippi All-Stars will headline the show. Through the power of music we strive to raise awareness and objecitvely inform our communities about the public health perils of hydro-fracking. The event is a celebration of New York’s number one economic resource and, our most precious of natural resources.  This community venue will also host educational outreach groups and expert speakers on the threatening process of fracking.  We call it event based education, simply put it’s music with a message.

While music provides the impetus for a large community gathering,  we also provide a platform for New York’s anti-fracking voices to inform citizens of the dangers posed by this aggressive form of natural gas extraction. Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., biologist , and author of Raising Elijah: Protecting Our Children in an Age of Environmental Crisiswill present an ecological perspective of fracking’s toxic effect on our ground water, air, and natural environment as a whole.

Good, wholesome New York State produced food and beverages will be available throughout the day as we gather to dance, learn, and celebrate New York’s clean water.

The shows sponsors include the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival, Community Energy, the Ithaca Beer Company, and of course the City of Binghamton.

Gospel/Blues/Rock supergroup The Word features John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), Robert Randolph (Robert Randolph & the Family Band), Chris Chew, and brothers Luther & Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars). The idea for the supergroup originated nearly a decade and a half ago when the North Mississippi Allstars went on tour with Medeski Martin & Wood. In 2000, The Word became a reality when Medeski and NMA were joined in the studio by pedal-steel guitar phenomenon Robert Randolph, and the quintet recorded their self-titled debut. The album was highly acclaimed for its fusion of gospel, blues and rock and was widely considered one of the best releases of 2001.  The Word toured briefly behind the release before resuming their respective careers.  The band reunited in the summer of 2005 at Bonnaroo and again in 2009 for a string of dates.  With multiple Grammy nominations amongst them and a legion of fans across the country, The Word are reuniting again in 2012 for a few select shows and have plans to release the highly anticipated follow up to their debut album.

Avant-jazz keyboardist John Medeski devoted much of 2011 marking the 20th anniversary of MMW.   To celebrate their 20 years together the trio released ‘20’, a series of new, never-released tracks each month of 2011.  In addition to reuniting with The Word in 2012, Medeski plans to record a solo piano record.

The North Mississippi Allstars spent 2011 touring behind the release of their latest album Keys to the Kingdom.  The album was hailed by both fans and critics and secured the trio’s legacy as the most intriguing groups to emerge from the Mississippi music scene.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band recently teamed up with T Bone Burnett and released We Walk This Road.  The record is a celebration of African-American music over the past one hundred years and its social messages from the last thirty.
