Catskill Edible Garden Project Summer Crew

Work Expectations: 29 hrs/wk Pay Rate: $11.00 per hour

The Catskill Edible Garden Project (CEGP) internship experience will provide an in-depth introduction to various aspects of horticulture and food production. Interns will work in all areas of the edible school gardens and community gardens and have a wide range of horticultural experiences and responsibilities. As they work directly with CEGP gardens staff members, the interns' daily tasks may include assisting with planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching and overall daily garden maintenance, as well as distribution of fresh food to local community services.

Interns will gain insight into local food production through visits to area farms and nurseries in Sullivan County, NY. We also try to provide a broad exposure to different aspects of food entrepreneurship, from growing food to the marketing design and execution of selling produce and value-added products at a local Farmers’ Markets. Interns will also work on special projects as assigned.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working from 8am-3pm Monday-Friday

  • Preparing beds using broadford or a small tiller

  • Planting, weeding, harvesting and processing produce

  • Adhering to strict food safety protocol when working in the gardens

  • Coordinating with community members to increase use and awareness of school and community gardens

  • Maintaining the school and community gardens

  • Taking care of equipment and tools

  •  Maintaining accurate records of work (planting, weeding, harvest dates)

  • Willing to drive work vehicle.

  • Donating produce from gardens, etc. to local pantries and food banks, as organized and available throughout.

  • Coordinating with Field Supervisor on marketing and planning for sales at local Famers’ Markets

  • Attend weekly intern meetings with project managers

  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Physically able to perform duties required

  • Interest in food production, social justice and health and nutrition education

  • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds

  • Team-minded orientation

  • Positive attitude

  • Ability to work in extreme heat and perform physical labor
