Information from U.S. Census Bureau:
U.S. Census Bureau’s Newburgh Local 2010 Census Office is recruiting applicants for temporary, good-paying jobs (range $11-18/hour) with flexible hours to help ensure the 2010 Census is a success. The Newburgh Office is looking for applicants in Sullivan County.
Specifically, census takers, also known as enumerators, are needed to conduct in-person interviews with community residents who do not return census questionnaires. These positions need to be filled by individuals with flexible schedules as work may occur in evenings and on weekends. Some positions may involve shift work. All temporary census employees must be able to attend training, for which they will be compensated. Most training sessions are held during the day on weekdays; occasionally, a session may be held in the evening or on weekends.
Job applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, be able to pass a background check, and complete a 30-minute, multiple-choice, employment test that measures knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a variety of census jobs. In most cases, workers will also be required to possess a valid driver's license and have use of a vehicle. U.S. citizenship is required to work for the 2010 Census except in rare occasions when no qualified U.S. citizens are available. We are seeking bilingual applicants throughout the district.

New position with Earthworks/OGAP:
Marcellus Regional Organizer EARTHWORKS is a non-profit organization dedicated to working with communities to reduce the social, economic and environmental problems caused by mineral extraction. The Oil & Gas Accountability Project (OGAP) is a program of EARTHWORKS. OGAP's overall goals are to advocate for greater corporate and governmental responsibility in the development of energy resources, and to educate and assist community groups concerned about oil and gas issues.
EARTHWORKS works in the U.S. and worldwide. We fulfill our mission by supporting communities and grassroots groups, by publicizing the environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of mining, and by working to improve government policies and corporate practices.
Chesapeake Energy estimates that the Marcellus shale has 262 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas reserves. The Marcellus covers a 54,000 square mile region in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia -- roughly an area the size of Florida. The Marcellus dips down as far as Maryland, but the sweet spot or pay zone of the formation is currently understood to be in western Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York. Thousands of wells will likely be drilled impacting many land and mineral owners, communities and watersheds. Leasing is occurring at a rapid pace and residents are being approached every day to lease the minerals under their land to gas development companies.
The Marcellus Regional Organizer is primarily responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to advance EARTHWORKS oil and gas/energy issues and campaigns with local, state and federal regulatory agencies, elected officials, and legislators. While most of the work will be at the local, state and regional level, some national level work may be required. Thus, the Marcellus Regional Organizer may be assigned work on this area or assist EARTHWORKS colleagues. At a minimum, the Marcellus Regional Organizer will be expected to have a familiarity with national issues and processes.
An important part of the work of the Marcellus Regional Organizer is constituency and coalition building. The organizer is responsible for building and nurturing alliances that will help EARTHWORKS accomplish its OGAP program objectives. While direct communication with allies will be critical to success, we also expect the creative use of electronic communication tools to be critically important.
The Marcellus Regional Organizer is expected to develop strategies and carry out work in cooperation with the rest of the EARTHWORKS campaign teams, but delivery is the responsibility of the Marcellus Regional Organizer.
EARTHWORKS policy reform work is both pro-active, creating change, and reactive, responding to events. Since issue developments, such as environmental catastrophes or legislative events, can t always be predicted, rapid response is essential. The Marcellus Regional Organizer is expected to assess unplanned external events and at times prioritize these events over planned work.

Catskill Center seeks new leader
Sunday, November 1, 2009
By JAY BRAMAN JR.
Correspondent
ARKVILLE — The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, a non-profit environmental group that is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is looking for an executive director to succeed Lisa Rainwater and is reaching out to the community for help in finding the right person.
The Catskill Center — based in Arkville, a hamlet in the Delaware County town of Middletowm — is charged with supporting actions to protect vital ecosystems and unique landscapes and to enhance economic opportunities in the Catskill Mountains region.
A search committee to find Rainwater’s successor has been assembled, co-chaired by Sibyl Golden and Frank Sanchis.
Rainwater “has announced her forthcoming resignation,” Golden said in a prepared statement. “The board of the center accepts her resignation with regret. She and her leadership of the center will be missed.”
The search committee leaders have sent a statement to leaders and organizations in the Catskills seeking input.
“The two of us and the other members of the search committee would be most grateful for your thoughts and suggestions about this search, for inquiries about this position and for any nominations and/or applications for it,” the statement from Golden and Sanchis reads.
The job description refers to the Catskill Center’s territory as a mosaic of many small and picturesque communities striving to provide a high quality of life for residents and visitors. It notes that the region is home to New York City reservoirs and the Catskill Park and Forest Preserve and features landscapes of unmatched scenic beauty.
The job description also states that the Catskills present a national model of the effort to successfully balance the many competing interests, such as New York City, the state, the federal government and numerous local jurisdictions.
The search committee leaders say the Catskill Center is looking for a chief executive with outstanding leadership, communication and fundraising skills and that the candidate must be enthusiastic and prepared to apply entrepreneurial thinking and skilled follow-through to support the organization’s approach to conservation and development.
At a 40th anniversary celebration in July, Rainwater, who became executive director in June 2008, said the Catskill Center’s mission has, at times, been a precarious balancing act.
“This hasn’t been an easy mission,” she said. “In fact, it has often put us at the center of controversy. But controversy often opens the door for dialogue, and with dialogue comes a better understanding of the needs of the community and who we are as an organization. We are privileged to have operated in this wonderful region for four decades.”
The deadline for applications and nominations for a new executive director is Dec. 11.
